Twin Peaks of Mars

Twin Peaks of Mars

Image Title: Twin Peaks of Mars
Source: Mars Pathfinder Mission
Description

Note: This is a highly shrunk and compressed version of the full image which fared poorly in the compression process.

This image struck me because of the twin peaks providing some vertical relief to an otherwise unbroken horizon. This was a view different than that provided by the two Viking landers. I was also struck by the thought that a human on foot would have a rather difficult time traversing the distance to the peaks.

Source Image Background

For this image, I did not work with the raw camera data files but rather manipulated the PIA image that I downloaded from the NASA JPL Planetary Photojournal.

Image Processing

This images underwent several steps of digital distortion as well as vertically exaggerating the image. The vertical exaggeration makes both the rocks and distant peaks more pronounced in the image.
